about the artist?
For many artists, the act of blending paint is based on intuition and feeling. Visual and performance artist Curt Walter has developed it into a science. Since 1976, he has been exploring the world of painting – from the old masters to contemporary creations. He has created innumerable works based on the techniques of TIZIAN, including glazes and mixing pigments with linseed oil and larch resin.
In his “cosmos of color” Curt Walter explores what happens when two or three pure pigments are combined. How do different colors emerge through the use of only red, yellow, and blue, mixed with white? In the search for the right pigments, the most important criteria are:
1.Pigments are light-fast;
2. 2. pigments can be used for glazes; and
3.3. Pigments can be mixed easily with other pigments. The final decision on which pigments to use and the methods of mixing them is entirely intuitive.
A color-space developed from the three-color theory and the pigments used: Permanent Yellow Light, Cadmium Yellow No. 1, Lemon; Scarlet Red; Hostaperm Pink; Ultramarine Deep; and Zinc White.
The monochromatic paintings evoke the spiritual qualities of the color. But Curt Walter’s work does not only address sublimity, spatial aspects, and materiality-as-approach. The paintings also present his precisely defined colors – the result of his individual artistic research into painting. The motif, in a figurative sense, no longer exists. Curt Walter has also compiled a set of theoretical essays to document his thoughts.
